Personal Support Worker

The need for qualified personal support workers across Ontario has never been greater. In only 8 months, Westervelt College’s Personal Support Worker certificate program develops the skills and knowledge needed to work in long-term care homes, residential care facilities, hospitals, home health care services and more. Our program is designed by the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) with training approved by the Ministry of Long-Term Care Act (LTCHA).

As a PSW, you will care for people who during periods of illness and recovery, assisting with personal care and household management. These tasks may include aiding with bathing and hygiene, meal preparation, medication and light housekeeping. It is a richly rewarding career for those who want to improve the quality of life for clients who need help during difficult times.

Throughout the program, you will develop a strong knowledge of palliative care, learn to assess your client’s needs and follow care plans that bring support and respite to clients and their families. Courses include instruction in patient safety and mobility, medication, cognitive and mental health issues and strengthen your knowledge of medical conditions.

You will also receive certifications in:

  • First Aid/CPR
  • WHMIS & Fire Safety
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)

A field-related practicum at the end of the program allows you to put your newfound skills into practice and gives you real-world experience and insight.
